Kirtans
Devotional Chanting/Meditation
From time to time, we open our doors for you to join us here at Under the Oaks, or at another facility, for a session of devotional chanting known as a kirtan, a Sanskrit term. The chants we lead are Indian devotional music & are sung in simple Sanskrit, which everyone can easily follow, or in English. We also include some American & Native American chants. These chants are truly beautiful & so powerful that they open the heart & take us to the core of our divinity, inspiring direct communion with Spirit in any religion. The result is peace within and without. The lead instrument of a kirtan is the harmonium, introduced to India in the 18th century by the British. Although the Indians eventually threw the British out of their country, they kept the harmonium because it resonated perfectly with their Sanskrit chants. This instrument is actually a mini-keyboard whose ongoing tone is propelled by a bellows activated by the hand that is not playing melody or chords on the keys. Its continuous drone sound, especially when accompanied by guitar/sitar or angelharp (Doug Travers), mandolin/guitar (Ellie Daulton) & hand drums/Native American flute (Tom Savino), is uniquely hypnotic & thus conducive to the the peaceful state of bliss that is the goal of a kirtan session. The session is led by Suzanne Alvarez on the harmonium.
Currently we are scheduled for kirtans the last Sunday evenings of each month., from 7 – 9, at the Center for Integrative Studies (Treehouse Yoga Center) , 8509 No. 29th. Take Busch Blvd; go south on North 30th; turn R at the light onto Yukon; take second L onto 29th. The Center is on the left about 1-1/2 blocks down.
