House Concerts

Please Note

After seven wonderful years of presenting house concerts here at Under the Oaks, we are shutting down the series as of January 2006. We are selling our wonderful home (let us know if you’re interested in possibly purchasing it!) & looking forward to life on the road by living in a trailer for perhaps a year or so, making music ourselves wherever we can, & shining our light into new lives & areas.

We thank all of you who have supported our series & have enjoyed what we truly believe has been topnotch acoustic entertainment here on our ‘Oaks’ stage. It’s been a joy for us!

This website will continue to list the originally scheduled per- formers for a while in the hopes that you will note who they are & support them when they get into this area. You’ll notice, along with our write-ups of the artists, a direct link to their websites. Please check out their schedules & go experience them in a nearby venue when they come to town!

For additional info on acoustic artists performing in this area, we suggest you get in touch with Gloria Holloway who brings many acts into the Tampa Bay area. She is responsible for our starting these house concerts in the first place in 1998. Ask to get on her concert list. Her email: gsholloway at email.com

If you’re interested in our doin’s while on the road, you might want to check into this website from time to time after this spring. We’ll send stuff to our very capable webmasters & you can keep up with our adventures around the country.

Thanks so much again... love & farewell....

Patchwork

Patchwork

Patchwork is a band made up of five women who like to play everything from original Florida folk, country and bluegrass to forties swing and rhythm & blues, all on acoustic instruments! Featuring award-winning banjoist and fiddler Tammy Murray, the band hails from Gainesville, Florida, and performs at concerts, festivals, schools, clubs and parties throughout the state. They’ve even been known to call a square dance or two. In addition to adding their feminine Florida flavor to special events at the Appleton Museum in Ocala, the Cummer Museum in Jacksonville and the Sunday Sampler in Dunnellon, they have also been broadcast live on national public television and radio. They are a favorite at the Florida Folk Festival, where they have graced the Mainstage for over ten years.

With the extraordinary harmonies and sisterly rapport that can only come from years of singing together, Patchwork's performances are a delight to see and hear. They bring a spirit of camaraderie and fun to all their appearances, along with the professional ease of fifteen years of playing together. Patchwork epitomizes the idea that "Girls just want to have fun"--and they want to make sure everyone else does too! For music that makes people feel like kickin' up their heels while managing to impart a little bit of history and education at the same time, Patchwork is an unbeatable combination!

Gove Scrivenor

We welcome back one of our favorites to our Oaks stage. Nobody performs gut-level Memphis blues by Brownie McGhee & Sonny Terry on the slide like Gove, "whose feet provide his own stomping rhythm section," as one enamored Australian reviewer put it. His talent on the guitar is considerable, & he provides some riveting, gorgeous sounds on the autoharp-- the instrument he used extensively to back performers like Emmy Lou Harris, Dolly Parton, & Iris Dement. Gove's stage experiences take in some mighty prominent performers: Doc Watson, Tom Paxton, Buddy Emmons, Glen Campbell, Marty Stuart & Hank Williams, Jr., to name just a few Join us in welcoming this roisterous, boisterous fellow with the the dark, deeply expressive funky voice, who-- from a sitting position-- literally swaggers & dances in accompaniment to what his talented fingers achieve on the fretboard. Like his CD title, this guy is "Solid Gove."

MPE Band

MPE Band

We had this youthful trio here a little over a year ago & they knocked our socks off! Generally we go for more seasoned performers (read "mature") because we're mature (read "older") & we find that so much of the younger folks' music doesn't appeal to us. But were we ever wrong about the MPE'ers! This threesome knows how to put all kinds of songs over in a way that appeals to all ages in the audience. We love their arrangements of songs, from the 30's right up through the present, featuring many stunning originals-- all genres, right down to a few rock-inspired creations! They are multi-talented-- you never know which instrument they'll pick up next... it's like round robin time on stage. And they are highly adept at showmanship.

Maggi's voice is truly jazz-inspired & is set off perfectly by Pierce's gifted guitar maneuvers & EJ's booming basswalks. And then Shazam! they're off to another inspired cameo, having rotated singers & instruments with the greatest of ease. The variety is endless! You'll absolutely love the MPE Band. (The dog....? plays drums!)

Jack Williams

Jack is a"perennial favorite" here at Under the Oaks-- one of the most giftest musicians out there on the circuit. He could easily go commercial & has had the opportunity, but prefers the intimacy of smaller venues & the freedom from control that managing his own performing career affords him. You'll rarely experience anyone more adept & mindboggling on the guitar (which isn't even his first instrument!). Jack's vocals are craggy & cool, his original tunes are superbly crafted-- melodic, intelligent, memorable-- & his stage patter is interesting, as well as edifying as he deftly weaves the thread of his material into the real life experiences of his songs. We have him back every year out of respect & awe for a rare talent that we don't often get to experience. He has quite a following, so as soon as his playdate becomes definite, don't linger with your reservations. Meanwhile, check out his website (above) for lots more info on this phenom!

Gordon Titcomb

Gordon Titcomb

If you attended the Saturday night show at the Florida Folk Festival in 2004 you saw Gordon on stage with Arlo Guthrie. You may have also seen him (or at least heard him) perform with such notables as Paul Simon, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Travis Tritt, Shawn Colvin, Hank Williams, Jr., & Peter Rowan, as well as many, many other well known performers. Gordon is a musician's musician. Although he plays mostly pedal steel in Arlo's band, Gordon is a wizard at the mandolin, dobro, guitar & 5-string banjo as well. He maintains a busy schedule with Arlo's appearances all over the world, but because he's Doug's oldtime friend & musician-pal from CT, he kindly consented to perform here at Under the Oaks in between Arlo gigs in Naples & Sarasota. Gordon is one of those super-musicians whose extraordinary feats as a multi-instrumentalist simply boggle the mind. Since he's been a studio musician for over 25 years & played on over two thousand recordings, he thought it was about time he came out with a CD of his own which features his rich, warm vocals, his original tunes, & some mighty good company-- Arlo, Bill Keith & Mike Auldridge. This CD, "The Last Train," is available on Gordon's website & will certainly be here at his concert. We're blessed to be able to bring Gordon to you. Here's your chance to catch true all-'round excellence! We recommend you reserve early.

Small Potatoes

After a hiatus of two plus years away from our Oaks stage, these two "electo-maniacs" will be a welcome sight... & sound! We can't think of a more talented, polished, inventive & entertaining male-female duo playing the acoustic circuit. We absolutely love the fact that they do it all-- from "Celtic to cowboy," as they say. They even yodel! Jacquie is a performer par excellenece, having cut her teeth on many a Renaissance Festival performance. Her award-winning songs & Broadway-esque stylings are unique to the folk world & make for unusual & super-charged high-level performances. Rich's superb guitar stylings show him to be an excellent musician, well matched to his mate's fine stagemanship. Jacquie also plays guitar, as well as a raft of other instruments including mando, flute, tin whistle, bodhran & various & sundry other unusual percussive toys. One number which they are known for & blows us away is Jacquie's "Wallflower" masterpiece where she sings the naive girl's part against a totally different but musically compatible melody sung by Rich which describes a young boy's first shy & awkward experience at a dance. You'll get to experience this showstopper when you join us for this fabulous twosome.

Chuck Pyle

Chuck Pyle
"The Zen Cowboy"

It’s all Jack Williams’ fault that Chuck Pyle made such a hit here last year! Jack asked us as a favor to consider introducing this Southwestern “Zen Cowboy,” as he’s been labeled, to the folks in this neck of the woods, adding that Chuck was the artist he listened to as one of his favorites. Since the one telling us this was himself one of our favorites whose awesome talent we respected, we could do nothing else but put Chuck on the Oaks stage, where—as predicted by Jack-- he put on a dazzling concert! A huge number of you requested that we have Chuck back, so we listened up & we’re happy to say he’s agreed to hit the trail once again from Colorado to Under the Oaks in Lutz. Chuck is an admirable guitarist known for his “Rocky Mountain Slam Pickin’ Style.“ He sings with a strong, forthright voice, performing highly unusual & original material—all of it melodic & memorable. A strong performer with quirky qualities, Chuck’s stage persona creates some very funny moments. His wry, dry philosophic take on life is easily seen in his creation, Inside My Face, which has been described as the quintessential Chuck Pyle-as-Zen-Cowboy song, with its hilarious invocation of short-wired brainstems, “reptilian gangliates,” & “psycho feng shui.” Some of his other “straighter” songs have been recorded by such greats as Tish Hinojosa, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, & the late John Denver. In 1991 Chuck’s Cadillac Cowboy was a top country hit sung by Chris LeDoux. This is a man of formidable talents, with at least 7 albums to his credit, as well as a theater piece entitled Zen Gallon Hat, which—similar to his concerts—wraps hummable melodies around warm stories, low-key humor & spiritual questions posed in Western settings. Folks, this troubadour is worth saddlin’ up for!

Ruth Wyand

Somehow, from somewhere, Doug & I wound up with a Ruth Wyand CD... & what a lucky day for us! Women have indeed progressed bigtime during the last half century, but there still aren't that many gals who can compete with the guys when it comes to guitar picking. Well... we certainly found an exception in Ruth. From swing, to ragtime, country, folk & blues-- you name it-- Ruth does the job like you wouldn't believe. No wonder she placed in the top 3 at the 2004 Gamble Rogers Fingerstyle Competition. Her superb original material, featuring lyrics heavily influenced by American roots music & sung with lively, competent gusto, creates the perfect complement to her award-winning fretwork. This lady is a killer musician-- just plain fine! (Her website has some great in-concert examples of Ruth making her guitar talk!) Can you tell we are impressed? You will be too. Let's give this performer our enthusiastic support by turning out in droves... well... maybe not droves, but a full house would be a good start!

Acoustic Eidolon

Acoustic Eidolon

If you're looking for a class act, you've found it! From the first time we experienced Joe & Hannah doing their extraordinary thing, we were totally won over... & so were many of you who have been badgering us to get this duo back on the Oaks stage. First off, cello-playing in an acoustic concert is a bit unusual, but even more unusual is a double-necked curiosity called a guit-jo. That's for starters. Then you listen as the most astoundingly gorgeous sounds come forth from this delightful & charming & super talented couple... & you're gone! We mean GONE! You'll find yourself totally immersed in beauty-- the first word that comes to mind to describe Eidolon. Hannah's extensive classic training on the cello creates an almost haunting human voice as she skillfully weaves in & out of Joe's stunning twin-necked fretwork derived from his bluegrass & rock roots. Together they produce the remarkable sounds that have taken them all over the world, from the Kennedy Center in DC to St. Paul's Cathedral in London & far beyond. Their repertoire is amazingly eclectic. You're sure to find something that resonates to your taste, since they cover Celtic, Latin, folk, pop, rock, classics, blues, & country. And yes... they do some vocals as well. Be prepared to be taken to another world when you experience Eidolon. (Should we warn you against driving when playing their CD?)
